Fukuoka travel basics

First visit? Start with your arrival terminal, accommodation address and one main plan for each day. These basics will help you leave room for exploring.

Information checked on 3 October 2026.

Where is Fukuoka?

Fukuoka Prefecture is in northern Kyushu, Japan. Fukuoka City is one city within the prefecture, so a place described as "in Fukuoka" may be outside the city. Check the municipality and full address before choosing accommodation or planning a day trip. Official prefecture introduction

Arriving at Fukuoka Airport

The Domestic Terminal connects directly to Fukuoka Airport subway station.

Arriving internationally and taking the subway? Use the free inter-terminal shuttle to reach the Domestic Terminal first. The airport currently directs international arrivals to shuttle stop 5, then the Domestic Terminal/South stop for the subway connection. Follow current airport signs and allow time for baggage collection, the shuttle, walking and waiting. Official airport subway directions, shuttle information

With a stroller or wheelchair, check the airport’s elevator route before following the nearest staircase. On departure, confirm your terminal again and include the transfer in your airport journey.

Hakata or Tenjin?

Hakata is a useful starting point when your plans involve JR trains or the Shinkansen. The station area also has subway connections, dining and shopping.

Tenjin is another central base, with shopping, restaurants, subway services, Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and an expressway bus terminal.

Our suggestion: compare the journey from each potential hotel to the places you actually want to visit. The nearest station entrance and the walk with luggage matter as much as the neighbourhood name. Official city area guide

Getting around and paying

Fukuoka City Subway accepts several major Japanese transport IC cards, including Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, SUGOCA, nimoca and the local Hayakaken. If you already have a compatible card, check its balance before buying another. Acceptance elsewhere depends on the operator or service, so check your exact route. Official subway card information

Save your accommodation’s full address and your return route. Keep some yen available as a backup. If you are considering a transport pass, compare its covered routes with your planned journeys first.

Weather and seasons

Fukuoka’s summers are hot and humid, and winter visits need warmer clothing. Plan breaks and an indoor alternative for outdoor days. Check the forecast shortly before travelling and again before a coastal or mountain outing. The Japan Meteorological Agency provides forecasts, weather warnings and tropical cyclone information. Planning days out

Choose one main destination, then check the final walk, toilets, opening calendar and journey home. For parks and coastal outings with children, start with our family-day guide.

Seasonal calendars are useful for ideas, but flower conditions and event schedules vary. Always check the year and the organiser’s confirmed dates before making a special journey. Official seasonal guide
